Our History

Hopewell Hospice Services Inc. is a registered Charity, founded in 1994 by Deirdre Hanna and Rev. Dr Ian Mavor OAM, who both believed in the need to help children dealing with grief and loss through illness, separation and trauma, thus creating Paradise Kids, an extension of their already formed Hopewell Hospice. The first Paradise Kids group was held in 1996, since then, various programs have been developed and implemented to successfully help countless children and their families.

Paradise Kids is located at 88 Allied Drive, Arundel on the Gold Coast and provides a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for both children and their parents. Over the years Paradise Kids has formed many partnerships, working closely with schools, community groups, police and other not for profits to ensure vulnerable children get the help they need and deserve.

From Humble Beginnings

The first Paradise Kids groups were held in various places for the first few years until it became possible to rent a building in the Allied Drive Community Precinct in Arundel. This venue was then purchased from another charity to become the first Paradise Kids House. For several years, the Support Services and Counselling Services were provided in that building, with some 270 children receiving the services of the Support Groups each year.

In 2005, the new Hopewell Hospice was opened adjacent to Paradise Kids House on the same site. Then, with generous support from members of the Gold Coast community, planning commenced to build a new venue for Paradise Kids on an adjoining vacant block, and this was completed late in 2008. The new building contains seven counselling rooms, including family counselling and parent support; two children’s group support rooms; a large seminar room for training programs and workshops; four administration offices and the Simply Divine Café for tea, coffee and lunches and snacks.

It was then possible to renovate the older building to create the beautiful Paradise Kids Holiday House in order to provide accommodation to assist families with sick children from further afield, such as rural and remote areas, to receive the help they need in difficult times. With this building, Paradise Kids is able to provide a fully funded five day holiday for a local family and a fully funded five to seven day holiday for families coming from rural and interstate areas. Whilst enjoying a break here on the Gold Coast, the families receive counselling and the enjoyment of special activities to create family memories to cherish through the difficult times ahead.

Surrounded by beautifully landscaped grounds, all of Hopewell's buildings have a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, encouraging relaxation and enjoyment, even though the realities of life may be painful. Paradise Kids is dedicated to help heal the heartache in children across the Gold Coast and we are grateful for like-minded community members who continue to provide us with financial support, their services and our faithful volunteers who freely give their time and talents to help make Paradise Kids.
