Buddy Corner

Be a PK Buddy

Prerequisites:

Ability to obtain Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Blue Care Card.

Must have completed the Grief Counselling Course with a Focus on Children and Grief provided by Hopewell Education Services.

WHS and Fire SafetyTraining (funded by Paradise Kids).

The Paradise Kids ‘buddy role is to support children to explore, understand, and express safely their feelings about their loss. Our team 'pairs up' a suitable buddy with each child attending the programs. Our program uses a mixture of story, art, music, meditation, discussion, movement, guided imagery, and breathing to learn stress reduction exercises. As a buddy you will always be working in a group setting with the child. Paradise Kids provides grief counselling training at your cost and the required blue card checks for our buddies free of charge. This helps ensure the quality of service and duty of care to those families entrusting us with their child whilst participating in our programs.

Pre-program Team Meetings and Resources

Each program has its own team (session leader, buddies and adult facilitator) who work with the children and their caregiver. Each team meets a week prior to the start of the children’s programs to discuss the program and the different roles within the team so that we are prepared when the program starts. As a buddy you are required to be available to attend the team meetings and the briefing/de-briefing sessions before and after each Paradise Kids Program you are a buddy in.

If you are interested in working as a PK Buddy please read through our PK BUDDY Role Description and assess what commitment you are able to make. The process to becoming a buddy takes time. You will first be asked to meet with our volunteer coordinator, Liza Moore for an informal discussion, then undertake all mandatory training and checks. Please scroll to the bottom of the page for the PK Buddy Role Description, our 2017 PK Buddies & Interns Program Calendar and contact information.

Paradise Kids has provided work experience and placement opportunities for many students over the years from the fields of Social Work, Guidance & Counselling, Psychology, Counselling and Welfare, and we have a strong commitment to continue to do so.

Students undertaking work experience or a placement at Paradise Kids have the opportunity to gain the following experience:

  • Participate as a ‘buddy’ in one of the 7 week grief and loss groups for children 6-11 years & 2-5 years. Each ‘buddy’ works one on one with the same child, within a group setting, for the entire 7 week program. There is the opportunity to witness and support the changes in their own child as well as the other children in the group. The group is facilitated by an experienced counsellor or social worker.

  • In addition the student experiences working in a team environment with other students, professional staff and trained volunteers.

  • At the conclusion of every session there is an hour of debriefing and coaching. This is a great opportunity to learn from very experienced staff.

  • There is also the opportunity to co-facilitate the adult support/educational group that runs concurrently with the children’s group.

All our Interns receive comprehensive training at the beginning of their placement and subsequently complete our Grief Counselling Course with a Focus on Children and Grief provided by Hopewell Education Services (including the Art Therapy and Working with Children’s Art components).

Through supervision by our highly qualified and dedicated professional team of staff and volunteers, our Interns learn in an interactive and supportive environment which facilitates both their personal and professional development. Our Interns play an important part in our organisation and are integral in our service and program offering to our community.

OUR VALUES: Respect * Integrity * Authenticity * Growth
