The 2017 International Volunteer Day was marked with a festive celebration in honour of Hopewell Services much treasured volunteers. Director, Vikki Strickland stated, "We would be lost without the help of our volunteers who assist children seeking support through the grief and loss program, who answer our calls and man our reception desks, who cook in our cafe and serve, who comfort the dying, who assist carers and their loved ones with massages, counselling, companionship and our gardeners who create and maintain the oasis that is our healing garden".
Whilst Hopewell Services has so many wonderful people to thank, two outstanding volunteers at Hopewell Hospice and Paradise Kids have been recognised on International Volunteer Day for their contributions to making our charity a success and contributing to its community spirit.
Councillor Glen Tozer recognised nominee, Caroline Jackson for the Annual Cool to be Kind Award. Caroline has been a volunteer for over 30 years across various organisations on the Gold Coast, many of them Hopewell. Carolyn brings in the colour and the music for all festivities celebrated at the Hospice. Throughout the year Caroline decorates our dining room for each occasion including Valentine’s Day, St Patricks Day, Melbourne Cup, and Football finals. In addition to this Caroline is part of a group that sings every fortnight to bring some joy to Hopewell's residents in their final days. Her reward is to see our residents smiling and enjoying themselves.
Robyn More has also volunteered for over 13 years with Paradise Kids, volunteering as a buddy and team leader alongside many children who undergo the seven week Grief, Loss and Trauma workshop. She is passionate about supporting children after trauma. Making the difference is what keeps Robyn going and seeing the children transform into confident, caring, resilient and healthy individuals. Her reward has been to see these kids come back as adults wanting to make a difference because of their positive experience. Robyn was recognised and shortlisted as one of three finalists for the 2017 International Volunteers Day, Volunteer awards at a ceremony on the Gold Coast.
